Frequently Asked Questions

What is holistic medicine?

Holistic (sometimes written "wholistic") refers to a perspective in medicine that sees the individual (traditionally called "the patient") as a complex being existing in a complex environment. Some articulate the complex being as "body, soul, and spirit," whereas others are less concerned with defining the parts of the individual. Regardless, holism sees people as more than a body to treat with medicine, instead we are physical, emotional, and spiritual beings. We live in particular socio-economic situations with infinite variations of what it means to be family, with various employment and relationship stressors and strengths, in cities or farmlands or wilderness, and with multiple toxic exposures. Health comes from a place of balance within oneself and with one's environment.

What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative medicine is an approach to healing that borrows from various traditions (and integrates them). At Boehmer Wellness, we mainly rely on herbal medicine, functional medicine, nutritional medicine, and traditional Western medicine to bring health and healing to the people we treat. Each person is complex, so an integrative approach eschews a cookie-cutter approach to medicine. Integrative medicine is aware of the wisdom humans have accumulated through experience over time and respects and borrows from such traditions as Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese Medicine, etc.
